Our history

The 4-H movement is a global youth development organization that aims to empower young people through practical, hands-on learning experiences. The name “4-H” stands for head, heart, hands, and health, representing the four areas of personal growth that the organization focuses on.

The history of 4-H can be traced back to the United States in the late 1800s. It was officially established in 1902 when A.B. Graham, a school superintendent in Ohio, started the first club as a way to teach young people about agriculture and related skills. The first 4-H club meeting took place on January 15, 1902.

The idea of agricultural clubs for young people quickly spread, and by 1914, the U.S. Congress passed the Smith-Lever Act, which provided federal funding to support cooperative agricultural extension work. This act allowed the 4-H movement to expand its reach beyond schools and formal education settings, reaching rural communities through extension services.

Throughout the years, 4-H evolved to encompass various areas of interest, not just agriculture. Today, 4-H clubs cover a wide range of topics, including science, technology, engineering, arts, leadership, and community service. The organization continues to emphasize the development of life skills, leadership abilities, and a sense of community and responsibility among young people.

4-H Ghana started in the year 2000 and became a hub of excellence in promoting Enterprise School Garden in Ghana and Across Africa.
